Make Out Tactics...Kakashi Style
by Sarah Hatake
The sweet smell of old paper and the occasional rustle of pages turning swirled around Seiren Fujimoto as she clacked her fingers on the laptop on the counter. She took a long deep breath, loving the smell of books. She had always loved the scent of books almost as much as she had always enjoyed writing. It was her escape from the darkness of life and had only made sense when she got older to open a book store. It wasn’t until after her husband had died in the last great war, however, that she turned the dozens of manuscripts she had written into an actual side hustle. It had been a last-ditch effort to earn more money to provide for her newborn infant. Ever since the great master writer, Jiraiya, had passed the lack of spicy tales had dwindled in the village. She had worked feverishly on that first novel, Shinobi Nights, and miracle of miracles it had been picked up by Jiraiya’s publishing company. Albeit, no one knew she was the writer. It would have been a scandal if the community at large knew that a woman had written the smut that would become a best seller. Her agent and best friend, Neo Hyuga, had found it a great lark to pass off the work as that of a man. So that had begun her success in the publishing world and had saved her from living in squalor with her baby girl.
She shifted her gaze to the door as the bell above tinkled as a new customer strolled in. She quickly locked the screen as her gaze landed on the sexiest man in the village… at least in her opinion. Kakashi Hatake, sixth Hokage and former wielder of the Sharingan, was once again inside her store. She carefully schooled her features into that of professional shop owner, trying hard to remember all her training from the years at the academy to hide the giddiness that stole through her frame. She would be lying if she said that he didn’t make her want to throw all caution to the wind and fawn over him like the girls had done when they had gone to the academy together. God that was ages ago. She had been one of his fangirls, but from the shadows. That initial crush had grown in the years following, watching him from afar. He had been a point of contention in her arranged marriage.
She had never loved Kenji Fujimoto.
Seiren did not like thinking or talking badly about anyone but Kenji was the exception. He had been a bastard, through and through. Their clans had been close and their marriage had been arranged long before they were even born. Yet unlike the majority of his family, he had a vicious streak that she had unfortunately seen the backside of through the course of their short marriage. The worst beating of her life had been because he had caught her side-eyeing Kakashi at Ichiraku’s one evening.
At seven months pregnant, she had almost lost her sweet little Keiko due to the beating. He had denied her the medics after and she had spent two days with terrifying contractions. Miraculously the contractions stopped and she did not lose her baby. It was not that long later that he had packed up to go to the front for the last great battle of their time, never to return. Seiren had quietly rejoiced when she was informed of his death at the hands of Madara when he had cleaved through the lines with deadly precision.
Kakashi had shifted his glance to her as he paused in front of the display where all of her novels were arranged. Those grey eyes of his briefly narrowing a bit in what she assumed was a polite smile of acknowledgement beneath his mask before he dismissed her to peruse the display.
He didn’t know she existed outside the occasional passing at the store. Yes, they had been in the academy together but he had been in a world all his own in those days. She was just another one of the nameless rabbles that attended with him. He was an avid reader, yet, everyone knew that he read Jiraiya’s works more than anything new. It had been almost a shock the day he had strolled in and picked up Shinobi Nights rather than a replacement for his badly worn Make Out Tactics book. She had barely contained the shaking of her hands as she rung up the purchase and he walked out with HER book in his hands.
Kakashi had since that day purchased every release that had come out. It was a boon to her, especially since he was the main inspiration in the male characters. She almost winced; however, when he picked up the newest one at the display. That was one was the most obvious that it was about him. The last one had been borderline, even her regulars had commented at how close to the Copy Ninja the character had been, but this one… it was a nail in her coffin. If anyone found out she was the author.
She concealed a smug smile that threatened to pull her lips up. No one would ever know; Neo was a master at diversion. She had a visual Jutsu that she could employ that would send people packing, forgetting what they had been pursuing if they ever got too close to the truth. He’d never know, she was certain about that.
Kakashi narrowed his eyes slightly as he read the back of the newest book by J. L. Namakasi. He had been in shock ever since reading the last one. The character Kai was so much like himself that it was almost like reading a page in his life in another reality. He had long suspected that the author was a woman. It was a little humorous that they had to hide behind a man’s name, but there were subtle tells that spoke of a feminine mind. If you were smart enough to recognize them. By the whole, no one seemed to have pieced that together. This book was a continuation of the story of Kai and Rose. The last one had been one of the dirtiest he had read since Master Jiraiya.
Seiren Fujimoto, formerly Hokato, had certainly changed since their years in the academy. He quietly observed her behind the counter from his peripheral, noting the changes from their youth again for the dozenth time. He couldn’t help but observe her. Even as a child, she had intrigued him but that had been times of war and death. Her long blonde hair, a trait that had come from her family’s distant relation to the Namakaze family, was loosely pulled up into a messy bun. Her dark, brown eyes were watching him closely as he looked at the book. There were other patrons in the store thumbing through books but her gaze never wavered from him. He had not missed that she had locked her laptop upon his entrance.
Neo Hyuga had sent him packing when he had inquired upon the authorship of the last novel. The two of them were close, had been since the academy. He was fairly certain he had figure out who the author was, but dare he hope? He had avoided all romantic entanglements because he had many enemies and people had a history of dying because of him. Yet if it was truly her, he would take that chance. He clinched his hand around the book and made his way to the counter. He needed to get inside that computer to confirm whether or not his suspicions were true.
Seiren felt her palms moisten in her nervousness as he approached with the newest book in hand. “Lord Sixth,” she greeted professionally despite the wild pounding of her heart. She made herself look at the book rather than him, smiling slightly. “Ah, another J. L. Namakasi book. I’ve heard good things about it from those that have bought it.”
“Hmm, yes, they have a good style. I wonder who the author really is,” he drawled casually. “No one seems to know and I’ve looked into it myself.”
Her hands twitched at the comment before she made a show of putting the book into a bag, giving a nervous chuckle. “They must prefer to live a normal life. Imagine if people knew as popular as they have become.”
“I think it’s a woman,” he then said as she handed the bag over to him. “I’ll find out, eventually.”
Seiren almost fainted on the spot. That was not good! If anyone could hunt down the author it was him! His eyes narrowed in a smile as he thanked her while taking the book and casually strolling out of the store. He had to side step on his way out as Keiko came bursting into the store with an energy that was almost felt, in her hand she had what looked like a scroll that she was waiving in the air.
“Mama, I passed the exam!” she howled lowly. “I’m a Genin!”
Kakashi almost laughed as the words followed him out of the store. Keiko was almost the spitting image of Seiren when she had been a child. Her personality, however, was vastly different from his observations. Seiren had been very quiet and reserved, blending into the background, while the few times he had seen Keiko she was extroverted and a little like Naruto had been in his youth.
Seiren found herself in a whirlwind as she listened to her daughter recount the exam, then hurry up to their small apartment on the top floor. The activity had shifted her mind away from the worry of Kakashi finding out she was the author and was filled instead with the daily rhythm of working the store and writing the newest title she would eventually release. After the last customer of the day left, she locked up the store, collected her laptop then went to upstairs. She took Keiko out to Ichiraku’s to celebrate the achievement, never once thinking her secret was about to blow up in her face.
Kakashi crouched on a rooftop, watching as the little family left the building to head in the general direction of Ichiraku’s. He had observed them long enough to know it was their favorite dining location, so he knew he had time to do some searching. Using his long-honed skills, he was inside their apartment in a matter of moments. They really needed better locks.
The apartment was rather small despite the success of her books. Most likely a means of “keeping up appearances” in her small deception. It was also painstakingly clean. It did not take him long to find the laptop and turn it on. Thankfully she hadn’t password protected the device. That would have been a pain in the ass. A few clicks later and he had all the proof he needed. A smile twisted his lips up and he closed the laptop with a satisfying click.
Seiren was a little tired by the time they came home and settled into their usual night routine. They watched a little television before it was time for bed. She stood quietly outside her daughter’s bedroom as the twelve-year-old climbed into bed. In the old days, she would have tucked her in but she was quickly becoming a young woman. She still always said goodnight and ensured she was actually going to sleep before heading to her own room at the other end of the apartment. She absently rubbed the bridge of her nose as she opened her door and walked inside the dark room.
She almost jumped a foot as she flipped on the light and saw the man sitting in the chair adjacent to her bed, his long-muscled legs stretched out on the ottoman in front of it. Those long, elegant fingers were steepled in his lap and those dark grey eyes were slightly narrowed on her.
“Kakashi- Lord Sixth… what are you-”
He moved so fast it seemed like a blink of an eye. Damn Shinobi and their quickness. He was across the room and closing the door with a resounding thump before she could even blink. She backed up reflexively, too many times of having her own deceased husband coming at her to do otherwise, and felt the door now firmly behind her back blocking any escape. One hand was now pressed flat against the door, another barricade, while the other was on his hip as he leaned towards her.
“I told you I would find out who the author was,” he spoke softly.
Oh shit. She darted her eyes to the laptop that was resting on the nightstand next to the chair he had vacated then back to those dark, grey depths. He then shocked the hell out of her by reaching up and pulling his mask down. Melting… she almost melted right there inside her room as she looked at that face. Handsome did not even accurately describe how breathtaking he was without that mask.
His lips turned up in a cock sure way as he looked at her with a perceptiveness that made her knees go weak. “All the many years I have known you, you have kept to the shadows. I would feel you discretely watching me, but putting me into your book was rather revealing.”
She gasped at the words, all thoughts fleeing as his lips crashed down on her own in a kiss that took her legs out from beneath her. His arms wrapped around her, holding her up as he ravished her mouth. Her body turned into a raging inferno before he slowly pulled back enough to finally say, “I’ve been watching you too.”
